Story
The name of the town is derived from that of an ancient Celtic tribe called the Aremenii who inhabited it in Roman times and were later absorbed into the kingdom of Wessex. The modern village was established by William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey (died 1240), whose family held lands here for several centuries until they became extinct with his death.
