The sailboat is the most common boat in use today. It has been around for centuries but it was not until the 19th century that people began to build them with wood instead of using logs or driftwood as they had done before. The first wooden boats were made from oak planks which were then covered by tarred canvas sails. These early craft were used mainly on rivers where there was no wind power available.
