The word “maral” means ‘the sea of the moon’ in Persian and is used to describe an area that has been flooded by water or snow melt from glaciers during winter months. The term was first coined for the region around Lake Baikal in Siberia but it can also be applied to other areas where there are large bodies of fresh water such as lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.
